Summer 2019

Community Events

There are plenty of ways to stay active this summer in the Natural State!

Arkansas State Parks are home to excellent walking trails for hikers of all skill levels as well as serene areas for fishing, swimming, boating and camping. Most parks feature programs and workshops on topics like outdoor cooking, birdwatching, and craft making. Some even host regional concerts as well as location-specific activities like diamond mining!

At Arkansas Libraries, patrons can find plenty of interesting activities in addition to books on a multitude of topics for all ages and reading levels. Many libraries host classes on a wide variety of subjects like cooking, genealogy, software applications, collage making, starting a small business and knitting among others.

Often, city websites feature calendars of local events like festivals, workshops and programs. Along with state parks and libraries, city websites are a great resource for finding out what’s going on in your community. Whether you want to try something new this summer or partake in an activity or hobby you’ve long enjoyed, check out Arkansas State Parks, your local library system and city websites!

The Importance of Controlling Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure. Just thinking about it can raise your blood pressure. But it is treatable and manageable.

There are many things that can cause hypertension, and knowing about them is the first step to controlling your blood pressure before it gets out of hand. A bad diet and lack of exercise are among the largest factors, but adding aerobic exercise, limiting your portion size and making adjustments to your diet can help lower it, or prevent high blood pressure in the first place. Avoiding stress, or developing strategies for managing unavoidable stress, can also help control your blood pressure.

When blood pressure reaches a certain level, medication is used, including diuretics, beta-blockers and more. Many of these medications are covered with your Allwell plan.

Contact Member Services if you have questions about what’s covered with your plan. We're here to help!

What is hypertension?

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. It’s when there is too much force applied by the blood against the walls of the blood vessels. Hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke and other life threatening problems.
